The big change that came through for many of us in 2020 during the pandemic period was perhaps the opportunity for a more permanent change towards remote working – whilst there are still some holdouts, the early start to the year suggests that particularly until the middle of the year things will be much of the same as what we’ve become used to, and the requirement and need for remote working only goes up. For those that have made the change already however will already be benefitting from the increasing flexibility that comes with the change, and as more countries offer longer term visas to allow travel whilst remote working, many are changing their daily habits. But if you’re looking to try a digital nomad lifestyle, the tech you choose is also important – so which are the important bits?

Your mobile device – A lot of the work you do whilst travelling as a remote worker will be done on your mobile device – quickly checking your emails, doing small edits, and taking calls, so it’s important choose a device that meets all of these needs. Another big change on the way is coming in the form of 5G internet connection – even where WiFi is available, you may be able to get faster speeds and more reliable connections through 5G so ensuring your device is 5G capable will certainly futureproof your setup.

Your laptop – If you’re going to be moving around a lot, something lightweight and easily accessible is your best bet rather than something big or clunky. Fortunately, many newer devices come packed with solid performance specs without needing something too bulky, but the same remains true as your mobile device – choosing something fit for purpose is essential if you’re going to be doing all of your work on the road, and so choosing something that may be a little better than what you need may be the best course of action.

Portable charging – Power banks have become increasingly popular over the past few years as a great way to stay as portable as possible without relying on outlets being available, but many are also getting much smarter with higher capacity and many more features – this should certainly be on your list of must-use hardware and with prices dropping you can afford to get something a bit bigger and a bit more robust to ensure lack of power will never be a factor keeping you indoors whilst exploring your remote working options.

There are many more suggestions offered by those who are also living the digital nomad lifestyle and Digital Nomad World, and with more opportunities coming for those looking to make the change it may start to be a popular movement over the next year. With other talks of future changes such as a four-day working week too, why not take advantage of the additional flexibility offered and make the most of your opportunity to try something new, and to try something that can have a great impact on your quality of life.
