When it comes to travel across the USA, Americans are much more likely to choose taking a plane over a train. Even though a plane seems more convenient and faster, there are a few situations where on shorter routes of 60-90 min, it is advantageous to take a train. Taking a US train route prevents long security lines, and offers comfortable seating as well as wifi throughout your journey. Here are some of the top US routes where the train can beat any airline.
New York To Boston
This route by plane takes 1 hour and 13 minutes. With a train, you can expect closer to 3 hours and 13 minutes. The difference in expense here is about $128 and although the journey is longer on transit, the time that it may take to get through security can add up to 2 hours to the journey. It takes the same amount of time, and you can save over $100 by choosing to travel by train.
New York To Washington DC
This trip takes 3 hours on the train or 1 hour and 20 minutes by plane. Flying with your security checks may take up to 13 minutes longer on this trip.
Miami to Tampa
You can save almost $200 on this trip by choosing to travel by train, as flying will only save you around 1.5-2 hours.
Los Angeles to San Diego
Although you will spend 2 hours and 50 minutes on the train and the plane is only 50 minutes, you can save $150 and arrive with only 40 min to 1 hour difference in timing when you consider the length of time at the airport.
Seattle to Portland
This trip is just $63 by train and you can save $300+ on the trip. The trip will take about 4 hours by train but 2 hours to save $300+ is likely a cost savings that would be very attractive to most!
If you are going to be booking a domestic flight in the near future, choosing the option of rail over flying may be a better option for preserving your budget and experiencing very little difference in organizing your trip!
